說到Genesis一般人都會想到Phil collins,但對我而言 Phil collins自 Peter Gabriel離團接替了主唱位置,Genesis不再是個地位跟神一樣的樂團了.他們慢慢走向流行,而失去了當年的激進原創的搖滾精神.
關於Peter Gabriel的介紹 ,諸位可以去網路上找到許多資料.Peter Gabriel負責早期Genesis大部分的詞曲和故事的創作 , 主題都是環繞在富人對窮人的階級剝削 ; 社會革命志士的枕戈待旦 ; 或一些關於貴族階級與平民階級的矛盾之超現實故事 ; 還有為下層階級人民勾勒出他理想中的神諭世界 .
他在歐洲搖滾樂壇的地位像山一樣高 是公認不世出的天才(Peter Gabriel 為1950生 出 Genesis Live-1973專輯時才23歲).
Genesis在Peter Gabriel時期,是70年代歐洲搖滾文藝復興時期(搖滾與古典融合)的先鋒樂團,當時所做的音樂也堪稱是英國前衛古典搖滾的菁華.
可以說Yes所做的前衛古典是若宮廷音樂般地出世,如哲學家般地描繪不食人間煙火的冥想仙境;而Genesis的前衛古典則是若古民謠般地入世,像苦行僧般地抒發以蒼生為念的苦悶情懷.
Peter Gabriel在Genesis的最後一張概念是專輯The lambs lies down Broadwa Em註1).製作這張專輯期間他的太太懷孕的健康因素也困擾讓他無法專心於專輯製作 幾乎未參與編曲的寫作, 該專輯加重鍵盤的份量 他和Tony Banks對專輯的音樂走向也產生分歧 .他覺得自己受限於Genesis的音樂框架 ,巡迴演唱後決定就離開Genesis,尋求開創自己的音樂事業.
曾在80年代紅了幾條流行歌曲 (註2) 其在流行音樂的成就雖不如後來接他主唱位置的Phil collin耀眼,卻無礙其在搖滾界的崇高的歷史地位.
但總的來說,不可忽略早期的Genesis的音樂如此美麗感人,沒有這些老團員的個人音樂素養參與編曲,也是無法竟功的;就像Roger Waters離開Pink Floyd 就開始失色一樣.
沒有綠葉與花瓶的襯托 , 一枝紅花也孤掌難鳴難顯其珍貴嬌媚
Peter Gabriel真要算是視覺系搖滾的始祖了,其造型和舞台設計至今仍是經典.他的獨特化妝和肢體動作,在Genesis早期的表演中,彷彿這是一場個人舞台秀,聽眾幾乎都忽略了其他團員的存在 - 這也部分造成團員之間的緊張關係 .以致Peter Gabriel宣布離團後,Genesis如同喪失了一個招牌靈魂人物,瀕臨停擺.
Peter Gabriel的舞台風格前衛耀眼.吸引了各種其奇奇怪怪的人來應徵主唱,但老團員經由一段篩選後,反而發現Phil Collins是接續Peter Gabriel唱腔最佳人選
的確也是 比較後期的Genesis 歌曲,不說還以為是同一個人唱的,只是少了滄桑味 ,但音域更深厚 在他們後來的一個80年代團圓表演上,Peter Gabriel公開說Phil Collins唱Gabriel的歌 比Peter更好.
但我個人喜歡Peter,因為他唱得很真情流露,像歷經滄桑歲月的吟遊詩人,Phil collins較像個流行歌手.
Genesis在前衛古典時期的音樂 是一個天才的組合 就像Yes ,Pink Floyd,Kingcrimson 一樣,每個樂手都有其獨特之貢獻 ,將所有榮耀歸諸某一個人對其他團員也會失之偏頗.畢竟一首歌的寫成 除了概念 故事 詞曲 還有最重要的編曲.
Genesis 之所以為Genesis 是那個時空點的偶然交會互放的光芒, 一但決定各分東西之後 那最珍貴的唯美感覺再也喚不回來了.

我想介紹他們的這一首歌曲 Get Em Out By Friday 這條歌曲收錄於Foxtrot 1972(註3)
但我喜歡他們演唱會版 跟之前在絲絨漫談介紹過的Musical Box 一樣收錄在同一張專輯 Genesis Live (1973)
我喜歡這首歌是它的旋律優美古典 它的詞曲是我在90年代才買到內附歌詞CD才得以了解
你可以先當古典舞台劇音樂欣賞 喜歡了再研究歌詞也可以 否則就一開始就費心研究歌詞對欣賞音樂而言有點失焦
這首歌曲採大膽的歌劇式演唱 ,Peter Gabriel 一人分飾多角(算算有7個角色) 以不同腔調唱出一部當時英國上層社會壓榨無產階級的黑暗史.
英國當時有一個都市更新計畫 政策是由私人企業收購國有破舊公寓再改建成新大樓公寓 ,Genesis描述貪斂的企業老闆John Pebble 處心積慮設局驅走舊公寓的現住戶 ,差使公司代表The Winkler先生,去逼迫誘拐他們搬離現址到新址,目的達到後喜形於色 自我得意.過一陣子又藉口新屋市價飛漲,調高新房租繼續壓榨他們,不管他們死活.
奇想的Genesis 甚至描繪過了許多年後的未來世界2012年( - 快到了! ),基因控制中心(可能被John Pebble收買)宣布為了人類福祉 ,人的高度必須改造限制為4呎以下, 以容許現有建築可塞進兩倍了人口.
曲末貪斂的John Pebble 開心的樂道 - 新交易又完成了,可以重複再趕人 改建房屋 提高租金的獲利模式 ,加上有基因控制中心的身高限制改造政策,可以買5賣34 獲得6倍更豐厚的利潤.
曲終 Peter Gabriel 唱出最後一句窮人的墓誌銘(也是富人的座右銘) : 有土斯有財 你能在你的天堂裡 築起教堂 - 你才能擁有快樂

欣賞Genesis早期的音樂 雖是同樣古典風格 但每張風格都不一樣 這張對味下一張又得重做功課 因為他們一直在蛻變.但這也是成就Genesis為英國傳奇經典樂團之因 - 或許早期的Genesis商業成功不及80年代的轉向流行,但為後人推崇和津津樂道的仍是早期的精銳作品.
藝術搖滾與流行搖滾最大的不同訴求就是藝術搖滾如同是做長期投資.好的藝術搖滾終究會獲得他的藝術價值的長期回饋.
一個加拿大樂團 就取名叫"The Musical Box" 自1993 取得Genesis的授權,在歐洲做一系列的cover Peter時期的專輯Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot , Selling England by the Pound 巡迴演出並獲好評.到2007也已經演到The lambs lies down Broadway

(註1) The lambs lies down Broadway 描寫一個少年在百老匯遭遇魔法 人格分裂的故事 是Peter 闡述其夢境的作品 非常個人化的作品 .我個人認為這張也是集genesis 早期古典前衛精神之大成的雙碟概念式專輯.
我個人喜歡這張專輯更甚Pink Floyd 的The Wall .也由於主題晦澀怪誕 也讓這張專輯的音樂大幅偏離genesis 以往的古典風 向前衛跨出更大一步 大量使用電子合成器 將音樂帶向一個未知的時空領域 也為沒有Peter的後 Genesis - 偏向以華麗鍵盤旋律為主軸的電子前衛搖滾風格墊出基礎.
The lambs lies down Broadway 專輯中的前衛搖滾節奏在多年後常在其他華麗的現代電子音樂聽到類似的旋律 , 個人認為如果能領會出這張前衛激進的專輯旋律之優美,那大概西洋搖滾沒什麼聽不懂的了.
欣賞這張片後 你就會了解The lambs lies down Broadway 對後來的Neo Prog有多大影響IQ,Fish,Marillion,Flower Kings等等幾乎是系出同門.

Peter的Sledgehammer獲得當時的MTV大賞.他後來一直致力於MTV的動感電影拍攝,讓觀眾看電影如坐雲霄飛車.從70代到現在,Peter Gabriel仍然非常重視演出的視覺效果.目前創作偏向New Age的世界音樂.
Peter Gabriel也曾幫電影[鳥人](亞倫派克導演) ,[基督的最後誘惑] 寫電影配樂並獲得獎項.
(註3)Foxtrot -這張專輯封面是地下絲絨的招牌壁貼.一個女狐狸妖精站在海邊小島上,無視於左岸上虎視眈眈的貴族獵狐馬隊.你注意的話會發現左邊的貴族馬隊中有一個人是美國的總統尼克森,馬隊中還有一個人拿手怕擦拭眼淚 ,彷彿兔死狐悲; 另有一個貴族其實是一隻狸著獵裝偽裝成人形,牠很尷尬地坐在馬隊中間,表情有點僥倖.當然別忘了馬隊右上角有一個我曾提過的Musical Box -NurseryCryme(1971) 封面裡的貴族小女孩在打人頭槌球. -趣味盎然 引人入勝的Genesis....

GENESIS 的主唱Peter Gabriel,他建立了 UK online music (distributor On Demand Distribution ). 在2004.6月賣給美國 Loudeye 公司 $38.6m .他在2004 7月22日 , 收受CNN採訪 時說到Dial-A-Program Services的概念:
My father pioneered this sort of digital content of electronic content in the 70s with a thing called "Dial-a-Program"
