Hayward大約19歲在斯溫頓（Swindon）時在女友送給他白緞床單禮物後寫了這首歌。當時他正和一個女孩分手，正處於艱難。不過，與此同時，他遇到了一個最終成為妻子的女人（至今仍是）。他經常說這首歌是出於當時的絕望和激動而來。一個關係結束，另一個開始。
